A small GPS system mounted on the dashboard of John’s truck bleats directions in a fractured electronic voice. John sips coffee from a travel mug bearing the faded logo of a long gone bank as he pilots the truck down a series of back roads. He squints at the road from behind a dark pair of aviator sunglasses. The sun is bright today. The road he was on was empty and, for a moment, it felt like the old days when things weren’t so… dead. Most of the highways  were still clogged with vehicles long abandoned and were now considered by John to be impassable. The side roads were less populated and provided plenty of room to go around blockages.

Today he was headed to a small housing development that he had found in his collection of census maps the night before. In the early days of the refinery, when they went on scouting missions for food and provisions, they also stopped at any libraries or town halls they came across for road maps, road atlases, and census tract maps. The information was helpful in locating resources. The housing developments were tedious, but usually densely populated. John tried to stay outside city limits whenever he could, the city was a dangerous place. There were plenty of the undead there, however they roamed in enormous packs that, though slow moving, could still manage to swarm, encapsulated, and consume even a small army.

He only went to the city when things got bad, and when he did, he didn’t go alone.

The development he was heading to now was about an hour’s drive north of the city. It was on a major commuter train line and was well populated with people who worked in the city. Judging by the tax rates, it was also a very affluent area as well. A border drawn around the development noted that it was a gated community.

This should be interesting; John thought as he continued down the road. He wondered how well their gated community held up against the army of the undead.

An hour, tops; he thought and sipped his coffee.
