The zombie hangs by its neck from a crude noose tossed over the crucifix of a fire-gutted church. A thin layer of translucent epidermis has separated from the worm-eaten black dermis that lies beneath. It clings to the decayed cheek like a scrap of wet toilet paper. Dried, lifeless eyes peer out in different directions from beneath lids that have long since dried into wrinkled, leathery flaps. A solitary maggot, fat from feeding, slowly inches from one nostril, leaving a trail of grey mucus over sagging grey lips that are peeled and cracked. The eyes slowly move and look down in uneven, jerky movements at the larvae. A black and withered tongue squirms out like a rotten slug and pulls the writhing insect in his mouth. Abscessed teeth grind it into a putrid grey paste releasing a small surge of energy, warming the corpses body enough to break the rigor and slightly move.
